Speaker 1: Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. There is a prize. Meat Eater will donate $ 500 to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing. I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Giannis, Brody, Randall, Mark, Reva, and Nick Glenn. This is a 10-round quiz show with questions from Meat Eaters 4 Verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking.
00:00:32
Speaker 2: Can I ask a question?
00:00:34
Speaker 3: Sorry.
00:00:35
Speaker 2: You used to give Randall top billing.
00:00:38
Speaker 4: Did I?
00:00:38
Speaker 1: I feel like I change it up a lot. Do you? I think I do.
00:00:41
Speaker 2: I don't know. I feel like Randall had top billing.
00:00:43
Speaker 1: And then- But then sometimes I'm like, I think I'm overcorrecting. I'm like, well, I had Randall as the first name a lot recently. So now he's bumped down to like fourth billing.
00:00:53
Speaker 5: Oh, I thought you've always done it by seniority. Because I was actually, when you gave me my list of guests for my show later today, I tried to rank them by who's been here the longest. And I always thought that's why my name came first.
00:01:06
Speaker 1: No, it's because you're the headliner, Yanni. Because you're famous, man. Yeah.
00:01:10
Speaker 5: Not because I'm employee number one.
00:01:11
Speaker 1: Is that your employee number?
00:01:15
Speaker 6: I don't know.
00:01:16
Speaker 4: Either Steve or myself.
00:01:17
Speaker 1: Mediator Trivia is brought to you by one of my favorite beers, Bush Light. Bush Light Head for the Mountains. All right, Nick, this is your first time on the show. That's why you were the last name. Tell folks what you do here at Mediator.
00:01:29
Speaker 4: I am the social media video editor.
00:01:32
Speaker 7: Closer to the mic, Nick.
00:01:34
Speaker 4: Social media video editor.
00:01:35
Speaker 1: That means when a really funny video of Randall comes out, you're the guy back there on the ones and twos.
00:01:40
Speaker 4: We're talking about me a lot today.
00:01:43
Speaker 1: Making sure that it's trying to make up for.
00:01:44
Speaker 3: That yep yep shooting editing everything okay everything you see.
00:01:48
Speaker 1: Strengths and weaknesses when it comes to meat eater trivia hunting fishing conservation cooking what do you think.
00:01:53
Speaker 3: Well i am a first generation hunter if you that's what it's called i don't really know um so still figuring it all out uh hunting wise but very confident fishing freshwater mostly saltwater but Fishing forward.
00:02:06
Speaker 1: Nick yelled across the hallway this morning from his office to my office that he got his driver's license yesterday. So now he's going to own a deer tag in Montana this year.
00:02:15
Speaker 4: Yeah, hopefully.
00:02:15
Speaker 1: It's all happening. Look out deer now.
00:02:18
Speaker 4: Seriously, congratulations. You got your driver's license or you got your driver's license back? Got a driver's license.
00:02:25
Speaker 1: Nice.
00:02:25
Speaker 5: In the state of Montana.
00:02:27
Speaker 4: In Montana.
00:02:28
Speaker 1: Oh, oh, oh.
00:02:29
Speaker 4: In Montana. I thought you just didn't know how to drive. Yeah. Figured it out.
00:02:32
Speaker 1: We're starting today with a mailbag question. If you have a question you want the trivia crew to answer, then send your question with the subject line mailbag to trivia at themeadeater.com. This is from Steven in Minnesota. When going out to hunt public land, I was wondering if the crew had any odd, peculiar things that they take into consideration. For example... I hunt a lot of public lands in Western Wisconsin. One factor I consider is whether the Packers are playing that day. Bonus if it's against a division opponent or primetime game. Another is that this small Minnesota town I hunt by has a weekly community event and I try to hunt whenever this is going on. My assumption is that potential hunters will be busy tending to these things, watching the Packers or going to this community event. I'm not sure if these factors really matter though, but I think it's working so far. All right, what do we think for Steven?
00:03:21
Speaker 6: I think that's smart, what he's doing and what he's thinking about. I mean, I always just look at shitty weather. Like, I like the shitty weather days because most other people don't.
00:03:31
Speaker 1: Or like the good bad weather where it's like November 10 and it's 70 degrees and everyone's like, oh, you can't, you know, the deer aren't moving now.
00:03:38
Speaker 6: Good point.
00:03:39
Speaker 1: So the good bad weather, same thing.
00:03:40
Speaker 4: Cat Grizz game in Montana. It's a good one.
00:03:43
Speaker 1: There you go.
00:03:44
Speaker 4: It's also good because you can. Stop by local bars like mid-afternoon and they might have a full spread set out.
00:03:52
Speaker 1: Okay.
00:03:55
Speaker 2: If you're able to, holidays are good too. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day is an excellent time.
00:04:02
Speaker 1: Yeah. There's been some studies done by Auburn University, Dr. Stephen Ditchcoff. He talked about this in other podcasts before, but that Thursdays, are the best days of the week on public land. That's when deer movement is the most normal. Saturday and Sunday, they get pounded. Monday, Tuesday, they're recovering. Wednesday, it's like creeping back to normal. And then Thursday is like the most normal that it gets out there.
00:04:26
Speaker 2: Not anymore.
00:04:27
Speaker 1: Well, yeah, we've now ruined it. I think, you know, this is like the fifth podcast that that's been set on, but it's just, you know, good advice in general. Thursdays are when the studies show that deer are on their feet the most. Anything else for Steven in Minnesota? All right. Good luck, Steven.
00:04:46
Speaker 2: All right.
00:04:46
Speaker 1: Before housekeeping today, Randall is going to give us a live tour update. Randall, what's happening with the live tour? It's canceled?
00:04:54
Speaker 4: No, it's actually on. It's on.
00:04:57
Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think Fargo has any tickets left.
00:05:01
Speaker 4: I got to go back. My phone's in airplane mode. I checked on who was playing Monday Night Football and it screwed everything up. Okay. So live tour, Grand Rapids, Michigan, December 14th. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the 15th. Madison, Wisconsin. I don't need to say the date every time. The following day, Des Moines, Iowa. Minneapolis, Minnesota. And Fargo, North Dakota.
00:05:24
Speaker 1: Who are you most excited for? Pick one. Don't be like, oh, they're all fun. I love everybody.
00:05:29
Speaker 4: You know, I'm very excited for Milwaukee and Madison. Oh, me too. I just think, good. That's our people. Okay. I mean, they're all our people. But Milwaukee, I think just Wisconsin. Wisconsinites. are a different breed, I feel like. We have a lot of love in the house for Wisconsinites.
00:05:47
Speaker 1: Yanni, which stop are you most excited for?
00:05:48
Speaker 5: I mean, Grand Rapids will be good because that's hometown pretty much, 45 minutes from where I grew up, and so we'll have a warm welcome there. Yeah, I don't know. I'm sorry, Spencer. They're all going to be great fun.
00:06:04
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:06:05
Speaker 1: Bill has been scouting tiki locations already.
00:06:08
Speaker 7: I mean, that's why Milwaukee is the site I'm looking forward to. There's a bar there called Foundation that I have not visited yet.
00:06:16
Speaker 4: There's also a sausage place I have recs for.
00:06:18
Speaker 7: Everyone's invited. Everyone in the crowd, you're invited too.
00:06:21
Speaker 1: Is it you, Singers?
00:06:25
Speaker 4: I don't know.
00:06:25
Speaker 1: I have to check my DMs.
00:06:28
Speaker 4: No, I don't want to do that. I feel like that's boring. TheMeatEater.com slash events. Go on there to find your tickets. Don't go to these weird reselling sites where they jack up the prices. I've seen in the comments on all of our social media, I've seen some people saying they got charged X amount, they got charged Y amount. Go directly to the website. They'll take you to the venue. Whatever, whatever. Follow trusted websites when buying tickets. Okay. That's all I'll say.
00:06:57
Speaker 1: Randall's the secondary market, actually.
00:06:59
Speaker 4: Was that sufficiently? You did it.
00:07:01
Speaker 1: You did it.
00:07:01
Speaker 4: Good, good, good.
00:07:02
Speaker 1: Now we have some real housekeeping. On a previous episode of Trivia, I had a question about the 10-letter word for the small tool used by hunters to track air currents. The correct answer was windicator, but a few listeners wrote in to say that there is another correct answer, which is an anemometer. Anemometer is defined as, quote, an instrument used to measure wind speed, force, and airflow, and it is 10 letters. So those listeners are right. If you said anemometer, give yourself a point.
00:07:31
Speaker 4: I had a follow-up to that that I forgot about. The other windicator we used in Austria? Bubbles. No way. Like little kids' bubbles. What? That's cute.
00:07:41
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:07:42
Speaker 4: Up in the stand, take out the little thing of bubbles.
00:07:44
Speaker 2: Huh.
00:07:46
Speaker 4: And then you can see.
00:07:46
Speaker 1: You can watch that thing glide.
00:07:47
Speaker 4: As they drift away, you can see if the wind's turning or swirling or whatever.
00:07:52
Speaker 1: That's a hot tip.
00:07:52
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:07:53
Speaker 1: I wonder if you like put some food coloring in there, if you'd like see it even further.
00:07:56
Speaker 4: And it's so delightful.
00:07:57
Speaker 2: Yeah.
00:07:58
Speaker 4: It's just fun. It adds like a little childish glee.
00:08:01
Speaker 5: But it would only work in habitat where there's like very little trees, brush or whatever, because.
00:08:09
Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean.
00:08:10
Speaker 1: But that's with any wind decatur.
00:08:12
Speaker 4: Milkweed.
00:08:13
Speaker 1: Get hung up on stuff.
00:08:14
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:08:15
Speaker 4: Okay. Okay, don't blow bubbles in the woods, Yanni. Have it your way.
00:08:20
Speaker 5: No, I'm just like, it just seems like they would very quickly pop.
00:08:26
Speaker 4: You're covering an area. You just got to blow a lot.
00:08:30
Speaker 6: Do they have a hunt specific vessel for these?
00:08:34
Speaker 2: There's a marketing, a real product opportunity.
00:08:37
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:08:38
Speaker 5: I'm a little surprised that it's not like a whitetail thing. I could just see Mark up in a saddle.
00:08:45
Speaker 4: Okay.
00:08:46
Speaker 1: Yeah, man. Nick, for our next April Fool's skit for our social media.
00:08:51
Speaker 4: You know how they make the little wand that has different shapes?
00:08:56
Speaker 5: Yes.
00:08:56
Speaker 2: You make a little shape of a buck and you blow through.
00:08:59
Speaker 6: All right.
00:09:00
Speaker 1: That's a windicator with a lot of whimsy.
00:09:02
Speaker 4: Writing that down.
00:09:03
Speaker 1: The Shelby Index for today is a four, so our winner should get eight correct answers. And with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil.
00:09:09
Speaker 4: Look, I need to know what I stand to win to everything. Just tend to win everything.
00:09:26
Speaker 1: Game on, suckers! Question one, the topic is biology. This first great question is via Justin Andrews, and as always, it will be multiple choice. Dendrology is the study of blank. Is it fungi, snakes, trees, or insects? Dendrology, D-E-N-D-R-O-L-O-G-Y, is the study of, is it fungi, snakes? trees, or insects? And Justin Andrews, he sent me this question all the way back in 2022. So for the listeners who are worried that they haven't heard their question yet, just know it's never too late. You could send one today and in 2030 on a show, I'm going to read that question. Dendrology is the study of, Blank.
00:10:20
Speaker 4: Are you going to be doing this in 2030?
00:10:22
Speaker 1: Fungi, snakes, trees, insects.
00:10:24
Speaker 2: Well, I'll be in walkers and canes and stuff.
00:10:32
Speaker 1: Randall, I don't think he even needed the choices on this one. Brody, do you know this one?
00:10:37
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:10:38
Speaker 1: Okay, Mark, you know this one. Maybe.
00:10:41
Speaker 5: I've got it narrowed down to two if you're wondering, Spencer.
00:10:44
Speaker 1: I was wondering.
00:10:45
Speaker 2: At least I'm very calm.
00:10:47
Speaker 1: Dendrology is the study of fungi, snakes, trees, or insects.
00:10:53
Speaker 4: I probably got it wrong. If I didn't have the choices, I would have said something else.
00:10:59
Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah, the choices help us. Everybody ready?
00:11:02
Speaker 4: I would have been in the neighborhood.
00:11:04
Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says trees. Mark, fungi. Yanni, snakes. Reva, fungi. Nick, insects. Brody, trees. Every one of the answers was represented. The correct answer is trees. Brody and Randall got that one right.
00:11:25
Speaker 2: Ice process of elimination.
00:11:27
Speaker 1: Mycology is the study of fungi. Serpentology is the study of snakes. Entomology is the study of insects. And dendrology is the study of trees, shrubs, and other woody plants. The term comes from the Greek word dendron, which means tree.
00:11:45
Speaker 4: I would have said herpetology for snakes.
00:11:47
Speaker 2: I think that's a broader term.
00:11:49
Speaker 4: Serpentology is sweet.
00:11:51
Speaker 1: Question two, the topic is fishing. Superstitious anglers going back to the 1700s have said that it's bad luck to bring this fruit onto a boat.
00:12:03
Speaker 2: We've never had this.
00:12:05
Speaker 1: Never done this one.
00:12:07
Speaker 4: That was amazing.
00:12:08
Speaker 1: I did something similar many years ago. I could tell you about it after this question, but I don't want to give.
00:12:12
Speaker 4: You any hints.
00:12:13
Speaker 1: Do you guys all respect this rule?
00:12:15
Speaker 5: No.
00:12:15
Speaker 4: No.
00:12:15
Speaker 2: I used to mess with my clients when they.
00:12:19
Speaker 4: Yeah. It's more like for funny banter. Yeah.
00:12:22
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:12:23
Speaker 1: Captain Randall, you didn't have any strict rules about this.
00:12:27
Speaker 4: No.
00:12:28
Speaker 2: Like if your clients really sucked, that's why.
00:12:32
Speaker 4: No, it actually, I think, I think I learned about this because I brought this on a boat.
00:12:41
Speaker 1: Bad captain.
00:12:42
Speaker 4: Yeah. But then it didn't bother me. because i didn't believe in.
00:12:46
Speaker 1: It okay superstitious anglers going back to the 1700s have said that it's bad luck to bring this fruit onto a boat but i got razzed is everybody ready.
00:12:56
Speaker 6: I'm surprised it goes back that far though there's a reason after this oh.
00:13:00
Speaker 1: Geez go ahead and reveal your answers we have the whole room saying banana the whole room got it right the correct answer is bananas This nautical superstition has been shared by boaters across the globe for hundreds of years, and it's not totally unfounded. Bananas release gas as they ripen, and on old wooden ships, this could cause other food to rot quickly. And because of their shortened lifetime, it's said that boats carrying them would try to sail faster, which made for riskier trips. So maybe it wasn't a total coincidence when boats with bananas seemed to have more bad luck.
00:13:35
Speaker 2: I got another reason that I heard. Hmm. When they would come across floating, like, whatever you called, they'd be like, the ship sunk. Bananas are floating.
00:13:46
Speaker 1: Bananas would make it.
00:13:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, bananas do make other things stink. I remember very vividly on a camping trip as a kid having a box of Captain Crunch ruined by banana stink.
00:13:56
Speaker 1: Oh, wow. I didn't know it was that powerful.
00:13:58
Speaker 4: You know, like, if you have bananas in a cooler with something and the bananas start to turn and everything just tastes like bananas?
00:14:04
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:14:04
Speaker 4: Did this to Captain Crunch.
00:14:06
Speaker 1: The question that I had that was similar to this many years ago was something about this underwear brand is not allowed on some boats because of their logo. It was Fruit of the Loom.
00:14:16
Speaker 4: Captain Crunch's real name is Horatio Magellan Crunch.
00:14:19
Speaker 1: Thank you.
00:14:19
Speaker 4: I just wanted you to know that.
00:14:20
Speaker 7: Incredible fun fact.
00:14:21
Speaker 1: Question three. The topic is hunting. This next great question is via Daxton Clatworthy. Otis accidentally shoots Carl while whitetail hunting in a 2011 episode of this post-apocalyptic show. Randall and Brody. I think they have the perfect game. Still going. They have their answer for number three. Otis accidentally shoots Carl while whitetail hunting in a 2011 episode of this post-apocalyptic show. Nick Glenn, do you have this one right?
00:14:58
Speaker 4: I believe so.
00:14:59
Speaker 1: Have you seen this show?
00:15:00
Speaker 4: I believe so.
00:15:02
Speaker 1: You think you've seen this show?
00:15:03
Speaker 4: If it's right, then yes. I have no idea if mine's right.
00:15:09
Speaker 1: Reva, do you have this one right?
00:15:11
Speaker 3: No.
00:15:12
Speaker 1: Otis accidentally shoots Carl while whitetail hunting in a 2011 episode of this post-apocalyptic show. Randall's uncapping his marker, thinking about picking up his whiteboard.
00:15:24
Speaker 4: I just thought of another post-apocalyptic show.
00:15:26
Speaker 1: Oh, geez. Phil, can you give us a review of this show after the answer is revealed? Do you have an opinion on it?
00:15:34
Speaker 7: I mean, I can give an opinion without spoiling anything, which is that I watched the first two seasons and checked out.
00:15:38
Speaker 1: Okay.
00:15:38
Speaker 4: Hmm.
00:15:41
Speaker 6: Knowing what we know about Phil, is that a clue of somewhere?
00:15:45
Speaker 1: If it is and hasn't helped Yanni.
00:15:46
Speaker 7: It didn't have.
00:15:47
Speaker 4: Enough nudity in it, so Phil was out.
00:15:51
Speaker 1: There we go.
00:15:54
Speaker 4: Crass language and nudity.
00:15:56
Speaker 1: Yanni, can you name any post-apocalyptic shows? Picking up his whiteboard. Otis accidentally shoots Carl while whitetail hunting. in a 2011 episode of this post-apocalyptic show? Great question here from Daxton.
00:16:18
Speaker 4: I have another one, but I think it's too recent.
00:16:20
Speaker 1: This is a doozy.
00:16:23
Speaker 4: Oh, jeez.
00:16:24
Speaker 1: Yanni, are you ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says Walking Dead. Mark, The Walking Dead. Yanni? Dead Men Walking. That's the Sean Penn film, isn't it? The Great Value brand.
00:16:38
Speaker 4: Or no.
00:16:39
Speaker 1: Reva says Metalocalypse. Metalocalypse.
00:16:43
Speaker 7: Oh, good answer.
00:16:44
Speaker 1: Nick, Walking Dead. Brody, The Walking Dead. The correct answer is The Walking Dead. The accident happens in the season two premiere of the show. Twelve-year-old Carl is walking through the forest when he comes upon a giant velvet buck. He amazingly sneaks to within just a couple yards of the deer and When a shot rings out, the bullet rips through the buck's chest before hitting Carl in the abdomen. The whitetail dies, but Carl survives thanks to emergency treatment from a veterinarian. Question four, the topic is wildlife. A 2018 study in a biophysics journal theorized that this seven-letter animal is actually an alien that arrived here on a comet in egg form 270 million years ago. A 2018 study in a biophysics journal theorized that this seven-letter animal is actually an alien that arrived here on a comet in egg form 270 million years ago. Randall and Brody are playing hangman and they've done some erasing. That animal didn't have seven letters, huh?
00:17:56
Speaker 4: No, it had eight. It would have been a good one, too.
00:17:59
Speaker 2: I think we should be right.
00:18:04
Speaker 1: A 2018 study in a biophysics journal theorized that this seven-letter animal is actually an alien that arrived here on a comet in egg form 270 million years ago. Nick is the only player who likes his answer.
00:18:19
Speaker 4: He's grinning.
00:18:19
Speaker 1: He's nodding. You got seven-letter animal over there that you think could be an alien.
00:18:24
Speaker 3: It's a seven-letter animal, that's for sure. That's why I keep checking my board to make sure.
00:18:29
Speaker 4: That I spelled it right. Any hints?
00:18:34
Speaker 1: I've told you everything you need to know. Riva, do you have this one right?
00:18:39
Speaker 2: I feel fairly confident.
00:18:40
Speaker 4: Okay. Wow.
00:18:42
Speaker 5: But I don't know.
00:18:42
Speaker 1: Riva and Nick are other four players, though. Don't have it. A 2018 study in a biophysics journal.
00:18:50
Speaker 2: This is like a legit study.
00:18:53
Speaker 1: Peer-reviewed. I'll tell you about it in the flavor text.
00:18:56
Speaker 4: A 2018 study.
00:18:58
Speaker 1: In a biophysics journal, theorized that this seven-letter animal is actually an alien that arrived here on a comet in egg form 270 million years ago.
00:19:06
Speaker 5: How'd you find this question?
00:19:08
Speaker 1: I've been vaguely aware of this study for a while, and I finally just made it into some content. I'm surprised more people don't have guesses. Yeah, good for you, Reva.
00:19:21
Speaker 4: Get them.
00:19:24
Speaker 1: This is question four.
00:19:25
Speaker 4: It's going to be us on the rest of the questions, though.
00:19:30
Speaker 1: Yanni hasn't done any writing yet. You just throwing the white flag.
00:19:34
Speaker 4: On this one, Yanni?
00:19:38
Speaker 5: I mean, I know a lot of seven-lettered animals, but not ones that would be, considered aliens, I don't think.
00:19:47
Speaker 1: A lot of weird noises from the crew today. Not even Nick. They got this one. You guys should show each other your whiteboard. Oh, and do you agree? Okay, that's fun.
00:20:03
Speaker 6: This is amazing. Two that are so confident in the rest of us.
00:20:07
Speaker 1: They know they're UFOs. Randall, do you have a seven-letter animal?
00:20:16
Speaker 4: I have a seven-letter animal.
00:20:17
Speaker 1: Okay.
00:20:18
Speaker 4: And I don't like it. I think it's an okay answer. I just don't like the animal.
00:20:29
Speaker 1: Yanni, Mark, are you ready? I got nothing. Sure. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Randall saying octopus. Mark and Yanni without an answer. Reva and Nick say octopus. Brody says penguin.
00:20:46
Speaker 4: Platypus. That was my first answer.
00:20:48
Speaker 1: The correct answer is octopus. Half of our players got that one right.
00:20:53
Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes sense.
00:20:55
Speaker 1: This is known as the panspermia theory, which says that life exists around the universe and is distributed by space debris. The hypothesis was first suggested by a Greek philosopher who believed meteors contained cosmic seeds that bounced around between planets. The 2018 peer-reviewed study specifically called out the octopus as being a potential alien. They argued that frozen octopus eggs attached to a comet might explain the mysterious creature, but mainstream scientists were very critical of the paper, saying it lacks any basic evidence.
00:21:29
Speaker 4: Yeah, that sounds reasonable.
00:21:30
Speaker 1: Could be 270 million years ago, though a comet with frozen octopus eggs hit the ocean, and that's where we're at today.
00:21:38
Speaker 4: I guess we'll never know.
00:21:41
Speaker 1: Question five. The topic is conservation. This next great question is via Brian Clement. The pallid blank, which is considered one of the most endangered fish in North America, was added to the endangered species list in 1990. Brody, Randall, Mark, Yanni. They all got it. But our UFO experts, Nick and Reva, do not. The pallid blank, which is considered one of the most endangered fish in North America, was added to the endangered species list in 1990. The pallid blank. This is question five. We'll get a scoreboard update from Phil, the engineer, after this. By the way, next month, our next five episodes, we have guest host month. All your favorite Meteor trivia players are going to be in the driver's seat. Yanni is up first, but we got an episode from Brody, from Randall, from Mark, from Nate. It's going to be a lot of fun.
00:22:47
Speaker 7: I wasn't asked to return.
00:22:48
Speaker 4: Why is that? Oh, you can host mine if you want.
00:22:52
Speaker 5: Oh, you hosted one, Phil?
00:22:53
Speaker 2: I've hosted two.
00:22:54
Speaker 5: I've said I've missed both of those.
00:22:56
Speaker 1: Phil, I would love for you to host. I'm on the 12th.
00:22:59
Speaker 4: You can have that.
00:23:01
Speaker 7: I think I might be busy that time.
00:23:05
Speaker 2: Was the D & D thing for trivia or something else?
00:23:08
Speaker 7: That was for trivia. That was just a fun surprise that everyone enjoyed.
00:23:11
Speaker 2: Right? I think I won, but I still have trauma.
00:23:17
Speaker 4: One of my greatest regrets in life is missing that day.
00:23:20
Speaker 1: That was bad. Bad for Randall.
00:23:22
Speaker 4: Great from Phil.
00:23:23
Speaker 1: The pallid blank, which is considered one of the most endangered fish in North America, was added to the endangered species list in 1990. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Randall and Mark and Yanni. The whole room says sturgeon. The whole room got it right. It's the pallid sturgeon. Pallid sturgeon are native to the Missouri and Mississippi River watersheds. They grow up to six feet long and 80 pounds. Their populations have cratered in the last 100 years due to dam construction and habitat loss. It's estimated that the upper stretch of their native range, there are fewer than 50 adult fish remaining. There is me with a pallet surgeon.
00:24:04
Speaker 4: Sick haircut.
00:24:05
Speaker 1: That had been like circa, I don't know, 2014.
00:24:08
Speaker 5: It's like the same haircut the kids are wearing now.
00:24:10
Speaker 1: God, I was doing it first.
00:24:12
Speaker 2: I was reading about one of those suckers that took a left out of the Yellowstone in eastern Montana and went like 150 miles up the Powder River. Which if you've seen the Powder River, it's like, how did he get that far?
00:24:25
Speaker 4: I like your glasses too.
00:24:27
Speaker 1: Thank you.
00:24:27
Speaker 4: It's like you're playing second base.
00:24:29
Speaker 1: Those are my river working days.
00:24:32
Speaker 4: Get them on the reds.
00:24:34
Speaker 1: All right, Phil, we're halfway through today's game. Give us a scoreboard update.
00:24:38
Speaker 7: My mouse will work.
00:24:39
Speaker 4: Here we go.
00:24:41
Speaker 7: We do have a perfect game on the board.
00:24:43
Speaker 2: Dr.
00:24:43
Speaker 7: Randall's got five points. Nick and Brody are a point behind him.
00:24:46
Speaker 2: No, Randall got one wrong.
00:24:48
Speaker 4: Uh-uh. No, I got them all right.
00:24:49
Speaker 6: I tried.
00:24:50
Speaker 2: I tried.
00:24:52
Speaker 7: Nick and Brody have four. Mark Kenyon has... Oh, wait. Mark and Reva have three. Giannis Patelis is in last place with two points.
00:24:59
Speaker 3: Are you sure?
00:25:00
Speaker 1: Only two?
00:25:01
Speaker 7: Two measly points. I'm 99% sure.
00:25:03
Speaker 4: I did that once. Don't worry about it.
00:25:05
Speaker 1: Yeah. Yanni got bananas and he got pallet sturgeon.
00:25:10
Speaker 5: That's it.
00:25:12
Speaker 2: Phil, aren't you going to rub it in that you never get it wrong?
00:25:15
Speaker 7: Giannis, I'm always right. Don't question me.
00:25:21
Speaker 1: Question six. The topic is gear. This next great question is via Andrew Heatherwick. This Austrian gun maker who is best known for their pistols announced in 2024 that they'd no longer be selling horse semen. This seems right in your lane, Randall.
00:25:40
Speaker 5: My gosh, Randall, if you don't know this.
00:25:43
Speaker 1: This Austrian gun maker, who is best known for their pistols, announced in 2024 that they'd no longer be selling horse semen. Best known for their pistols. Best known for their pistols. This Austrian gun maker, who is best known for their pistols, announced in 2024 that they'd no longer be selling horse semen. Randall, do you have this one right?
00:26:12
Speaker 4: I don't know.
00:26:13
Speaker 1: How many Austrian gun makers can you.
00:26:15
Speaker 4: Name, you think? I mean, I have two down right now.
00:26:19
Speaker 1: Okay.
00:26:22
Speaker 4: The horse semen is what's throwing me off. I don't think I've ever purchased horse semen from an Austrian gun maker.
00:26:33
Speaker 1: He thinks. You're more of a German horse semen guy.
00:26:36
Speaker 4: Now the Swiss tell you what.
00:26:41
Speaker 2: I wonder if they also sell guns with which to implant the horse semen.
00:26:46
Speaker 4: Interesting.
00:26:47
Speaker 1: This Austrian gun maker who is best known for their pistols announced in 2024 that they'd no longer be selling horse semen.
00:26:55
Speaker 6: What I want to know is what kind of rabbit hole led you to this? Were you Googling pistols or semen?
00:26:59
Speaker 1: The rabbit hole was Andrew Heatherwick sending me this great question. Okay, Andrew did it. Well, same question to him.
00:27:06
Speaker 4: I just, yeah. I feel like if it's not what I think it is, it's too esoteric for most of the room.
00:27:15
Speaker 1: Okay.
00:27:17
Speaker 4: But I don't know.
00:27:18
Speaker 1: Do our other players give up? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says Glock, Mark, Taurus, Yanni, Colt, Reva, Nick without an answer, Brody, H, and K. The correct answer is Glock. Randall. Oh, my God. I'm not sure. Jesus Christ. Glock, which started selling guns in 1982, created a branch of their business dedicated to horses in 2010. The Glock Horse Performance Center was a high-profile training and breeding operation that became one of the powerhouses of dressage. But after Glock's founder died in 2023, the family announced that they'd be shuttering the equine side of their business.
00:28:04
Speaker 4: Yeah, I figured that... Yeah, the date lined up with the family... What not.
00:28:11
Speaker 1: They had a good run as the premier dressage.
00:28:15
Speaker 4: They have a big facility in Furlock. Glock does. Yes.
00:28:18
Speaker 1: Well, I think they used to, but I think it's like since their announcement, they've been moving away from it. And they said by 2026, all will be out of the Glock name.
00:28:28
Speaker 4: Not the semen. The guns.
00:28:30
Speaker 1: The guns.
00:28:31
Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. No, the guns.
00:28:34
Speaker 1: Question seven. The topic is fishing.
00:28:37
Speaker 5: Oh, man.
00:28:38
Speaker 1: This six letter word is defined as, quote, a small, low powered auxiliary outboard engine mounted on a boat's transom next to the primary engine. Randall and Brody, they got it. Yanni, he thinks he has it. This six letter word is defined as a small, low powered auxiliary outboard engine mounted on a boat's transom next to the primary engine.
00:29:09
Speaker 2: I got one of these I need to sell.
00:29:13
Speaker 1: Has your bear rug sold yet?
00:29:15
Speaker 4: Yep. Oh, it did.
00:29:17
Speaker 1: Congratulations.
00:29:18
Speaker 5: Did you sell it through the store? How'd you do it?
00:29:20
Speaker 1: Did you have to come down off of your original ask?
00:29:24
Speaker 2: Well, I mean, there's always some haggling involved.
00:29:27
Speaker 1: Okay.
00:29:27
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:29:28
Speaker 1: All right. Now you can find Brody's this thing at the store next.
00:29:33
Speaker 4: Yeah. You should put it. In the window.
00:29:37
Speaker 1: This six-letter word is defined as, quote, a small, low-powered auxiliary outboard engine mounted on a boat's transom next to the primary engine. Randall switched up his seat today because the other one's been bad luck.
00:29:51
Speaker 4: It has.
00:29:52
Speaker 1: And now Yanni, who's in last place, is in the bad luck seat.
00:29:56
Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know if I shared this on On the air, but I had someone the other day greet me and said, you used to be so good at trivia. Oh, no. That's mean. I figured desperate times.
00:30:10
Speaker 2: Are you done with stats of the week?
00:30:12
Speaker 1: I think I'm done with stats.
00:30:13
Speaker 4: Really? Yeah.
00:30:14
Speaker 1: We've seen all the stats by now. I'd rather answer the listener questions that they have. Six-letter word is defined as a small, low-powered auxiliary outboard engine mounted on a boat's transom next to the primary engine. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says, kicker. Mark without an answer. Yanni, kicker. Reva and Nick without an answer. Brody, kicker. The correct answer is kicker.
00:30:42
Speaker 2: Nick, I understand it's your first time, but you came in here hard on the fishing thing. Hey, I'm on boats, saltwater.
00:30:48
Speaker 4: We don't really call them kickers.
00:30:50
Speaker 1: What do you call them?
00:30:51
Speaker 3: It's just like a trolling motor or like the outboard motor. I was just trying to think if something was six and nothing came.
00:30:58
Speaker 1: Kicker motors range from five horsepower to 25 horsepower with 9.9 being the most popular choice. By not going above 10 horsepower, the engine skirts rules regarding registration and horsepower limits. The purpose of a kicker is to give anglers low speed control of the boat while also having a reliable emergency backup motor. What horsepower is yours, Brody?
00:31:21
Speaker 4: 9.9? 0.5?
00:31:22
Speaker 1: We're on to question eight. The topic is conservation. Timbuktu, which is a real city on this continent, was a hub for the global ivory trade for three centuries.
00:31:37
Speaker 4: Am I spelling right?
00:31:39
Speaker 1: Timbuktu, which is a real city on this continent, was a hub for the global ivory trade for three centuries. Randall, do you just know this one? Or are you taking a guess?
00:31:52
Speaker 4: I knew this. I also feel like there's Only a few to choose from. And there's some sufficient context in the question.
00:32:02
Speaker 1: Timbuktu, which is a real city on this continent, was a hub for the global ivory trade for three centuries. That's a man who's confident in his position on the scoreboard. Just handing out all those hints.
00:32:18
Speaker 4: Is it a hint?
00:32:19
Speaker 1: I guess.
00:32:20
Speaker 4: I mean, the continents, yeah.
00:32:22
Speaker 2: I can't catch them anyway. I'm leaving my answer the way it is.
00:32:25
Speaker 1: Timbuktu, which is a real city on this continent, was a hub for the global ivory trade for three centuries. Mark, you know this one? Eh, just a guess.
00:32:37
Speaker 4: I bet it's a good one.
00:32:39
Speaker 1: We'll get another scoreboard update from Phil after this. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says Africa. Mark, Africa. Yanni, Africa. Reva, Africa.
00:32:50
Speaker 4: Nick, Africa.
00:32:51
Speaker 1: Brody, Asia. The correct answer is Africa. The room did well.
00:32:57
Speaker 4: Africa.
00:32:58
Speaker 1: From the 13th to 16th century, Timbuktu was one of the wealthiest and most influential trading hubs in the world. It trafficked everything, but its main economy was gold, salt, ivory, silks, grain, horses, and books. Timbuktu is located where the Sahara Desert meets the Niger River, which historians called the, quote, camel meets canoe crossroads. Its proximity to Africa's elephant-rich interior specifically made it an epicenter for ivory trade. Artville, two questions left. Let's see the scoreboard. Oh, there was two. Dang it.
00:33:34
Speaker 7: Randall caused a bit of an anticlimactic game here because he's locked up the victory.
00:33:39
Speaker 4: With eight points.
00:33:39
Speaker 7: He's three points ahead of the second-place players, who are Brody and Nick with five points, and then Giannis, Mark, and Riva.
00:33:47
Speaker 4: Tight up with four. I hope I don't blow it at the end.
00:33:49
Speaker 1: See if you can get a perfect game and double the donation to $ 1, 000. That's what I mean. Question nine. The topic is cooking. This is our listener question of the week, which was won by David Hayes for sending this great question. David is going to get a $ 150 First Light gift card. If you want a chance to win the listener question of the week, then send your question to trivia at themeateater.com. This figurative and literal culinary phrase says that you should, quote, boil the piss out of blank. when cooking these organs. This figurative and literal culinary phrase says that you should boil the piss out of blank when cooking these organs. Randall and Brody, they have their answers. You boys have this one, right?
00:34:38
Speaker 4: I think so.
00:34:40
Speaker 7: Spencer sent me a picture of the location of Timbuktu, and so I'm just going to bring that up.
00:34:44
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, there it is. In case you're wondering, we're on the globe. Timbuktu is located. Now you got it. You can see where the desert comes right up and butts up against the green. That's what made its location for trade so special.
00:34:58
Speaker 4: I wanted to make a joke about the camel canoe crossroads.
00:35:02
Speaker 1: What's the joke?
00:35:03
Speaker 4: Well, it's going to be something to do with cigarettes, but.
00:35:05
Speaker 1: I haven't gotten there yet. Okay, you think on that. This figurative and literal culinary phrase. Says that you should boil the piss out of blank when cooking these organs.
00:35:18
Speaker 2: Sounds like something Steve would say.
00:35:23
Speaker 1: The culinary phrase or the camel thing?
00:35:26
Speaker 4: No, not the camel thing. Yeah, that's too highbrow.
00:35:33
Speaker 1: This figurative and literal culinary phrase says that you should boil the piss out of blank when cooking these organs. Yanni is hosting next week.
00:35:44
Speaker 5: Is the answer what those organs are?
00:35:46
Speaker 4: Yes. Yeah.
00:35:51
Speaker 1: Hmm. He's stumped.
00:35:53
Speaker 4: What was your answer? Did you have one?
00:35:57
Speaker 1: No.
00:35:58
Speaker 2: Does this mean there's more?
00:35:59
Speaker 4: I got so many.
00:36:00
Speaker 2: No, I'm going to leave it. Doesn't matter.
00:36:04
Speaker 1: Yanni is hosting next week. Yanni, how are you feeling about that episode? You like your questions that you wrote?
00:36:08
Speaker 5: Yeah, Jennifer said they were fun.
00:36:10
Speaker 1: All right. That's nice. Do you have an answer to this one?
00:36:14
Speaker 5: She wouldn't lie.
00:36:15
Speaker 4: I'm excited for that episode.
00:36:16
Speaker 2: Spencer, we were having a debate. When I host, if my goal is to have three people get a perfect game for a tiebreaker, would you be mad if I did that?
00:36:25
Speaker 6: No, do that.
00:36:26
Speaker 1: That would be fun. That's why it's fun to have the guest host, because you guys just bring some different flavor than what you get every other week of the year.
00:36:34
Speaker 4: I'm thinking about doing all of my questions about Ace Ventura 1 and 2. Okay.
00:36:41
Speaker 1: I'll study up then.
00:36:43
Speaker 4: Great movie.
00:36:44
Speaker 1: Waiting on Yanni down there.
00:36:45
Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, yeah, let's go.
00:36:46
Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says kidneys. Mark, kidneys, Yanni bladder, Reva liver, Nick kidneys, Brody kidneys. The correct answer is kidneys. Urine is made in the kidneys, and that pungent smell can be noticeable when cooking. To prevent this, it's recommended that you trim the kidneys, then soak them in milk overnight, then boil them two to three times for five minutes each. For a classic kidney dish, check out Daniel Pruitt's venison steak and kidney pie recipe on TheMeatEater.com.
00:37:20
Speaker 2: Never eaten them.
00:37:21
Speaker 1: Has anybody? I don't think I have either.
00:37:23
Speaker 4: Yeah, the only memory I have of it is it just tasted like I buried my head in urine-soaked straw in a barn. That was the number one. It was just like it tasted the way that It smells when you walk into a barn where they haven't changed out the head.
00:37:43
Speaker 1: Did the cook know what they were doing? Apparently they did not do that. I don't know.
00:37:45
Speaker 4: Okay. I don't know. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt until now, but it seems like there is a way to get rid of the piss.
00:37:50
Speaker 1: Boil the piss out of him. All right, here's the correct answer review so far. One was dendrology is the study of trees. Two, bananas. Three, the walking dead. Four, octopus. Five, sturgeon. Six, glock. Seven, kicker motor. Eight... Africa, nine kidneys. Phil, scoreboard update.
00:38:09
Speaker 7: Well, I spoke too soon about it being anticlimactic because Randall still has the perfect game going into question 10.
00:38:15
Speaker 4: I almost wish I'd blown it on the last one.
00:38:18
Speaker 1: The topic is wildlife. This five-letter word is defined as, quote, the male bee of a honeybee colony whose sole purpose is to mate with the queen. And he seems to have it. Had this answer before I finished the question. You a honeybee boy over there? You gonna start raising those with your chickens?
00:38:38
Speaker 4: No, I hate bees, man. I'll be honest. Okay. They sting me. I swell up real bad.
00:38:43
Speaker 1: That's why you know your enemy so well. You got this one right.
00:38:46
Speaker 4: I hope so.
00:38:47
Speaker 1: Did I get it right? I didn't see your answer. I just saw how quickly you wrote. Gosh, I think it's right. This five-letter word is defined as the male bee of a honeybee colony whose sole purpose is to mate with the queen.
00:39:01
Speaker 2: I'm fixing to argue about this one.
00:39:03
Speaker 4: Really? Oh, yeah.
00:39:05
Speaker 2: Just wait.
00:39:08
Speaker 5: Yeah. Let your blood pressure start rising now in anticipation.
00:39:12
Speaker 1: For Yanni's game.
00:39:14
Speaker 5: No.
00:39:14
Speaker 4: Phil. No.
00:39:15
Speaker 5: For this argument.
00:39:16
Speaker 4: Is this a word that you like? Oh.
00:39:20
Speaker 7: I have no idea what you're getting at.
00:39:22
Speaker 4: Oh, no, no. Actually, that doesn't make sense. Yeah, never mind.
00:39:25
Speaker 1: Okay.
00:39:26
Speaker 6: Great.
00:39:26
Speaker 4: I was confusing this term. We'll just pretend this didn't happen. I was confusing this term with another term.
00:39:29
Speaker 1: Is everybody ready?
00:39:30
Speaker 5: I don't have an answer.
00:39:31
Speaker 1: Let's see if he has the perfect game. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says drone. Mark, drone. Yanni without an answer. Reva, steer. Nick without an answer. Brody says daddy. This episode had UFOs, it had horse semen, and now it has daddy. Daddy.
00:39:53
Speaker 4: Tell me I'm wrong.
00:39:53
Speaker 1: The correct answer.
00:39:54
Speaker 4: Argue for it.
00:39:55
Speaker 1: Is drone. Randall got it. He's got the perfect game. I think that's back-to-back weeks now.
00:40:01
Speaker 4: We've had perfect games. We had Brody.
00:40:03
Speaker 1: Last week and Randall this week. The three types of bees in a beehive are queens, workers, and drones. The queen bee lays eggs. Drone bees mate with virgin queens. and worker bees focus on hive maintenance, defense, and food gathering. Worker bees choose queens when that female is just a couple days old in larva form. When a queen is selected, it is fed a special diet of royal jelly that triggers the development of reproductive organs. The royal jelly. That's what the bee people call it. You're going to be a bee man yet.
00:40:36
Speaker 4: To explain my thinking there, I had, for whatever reason in my mind, I had conflated the term droid with drone. I was thinking of C-3PO and R2-D2.
00:40:46
Speaker 7: C-3PO, the most annoying and insufferable killer.
00:40:49
Speaker 1: It still would have been weird, though.
00:40:51
Speaker 4: Yeah, it would have been weird.
00:40:52
Speaker 1: Phil loves the word.
00:40:53
Speaker 6: I know.
00:40:53
Speaker 1: All right, Randall did it. He got double-digit correct answers. The perfect game. What are you going to do with that $ 1, 000 donation?
00:41:00
Speaker 4: Let's donate this to the North American Pronghorn Foundation.
00:41:04
Speaker 1: Okay, I think that's a first for us.
00:41:06
Speaker 4: I think it's a new one.
