College Angler Killed During Fishing Tournament

A South Carolina community mourns the loss of 18-year-old Jack Hunt today. Hunt was a freshman at Erskine College where he competed on the intercollegiate bass fishing team.

According to local reports, Hunt was killed when his boat struck a piece of debris, which then struck Hunt. Hunt was traveling to a Lake Secession dock at 11:41 p.m. Friday night when the accident occurred. A fellow student was also in the boat but was unharmed. South Carolina Department of Natural Resources investigator David Lucas said the two anglers were participating in an overnight bass fishing tournament.

Hunt was a two-time Bassmaster High School All-State angler and competed in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series. His coach said Hunt was destined for a career in tournament fishing, but that he’ll be remembered for more than catching bass.

“Everybody says that fishing for a living is their dream, but Jack was one of very few in the area that was a true rising star in the making,” Erskine College coach Ryan Teems said in an interview with Bassmaster. “Outside of fishing, he was such a loving guy. He always talked about the importance of his faith. Jack always had a smile on his face, even at the worst times.”
