Bill Richardson's Dangerous Game

Blood Trails Case Files
Richardson Pigeon Shooting (family photo).jpg

On August 1, 1971, Bill Richardson returned to his Corpus Christi, Texas, home after a weekend of competitive pigeon shooting. A decorated Marine veteran, avid hunter, and successful businessman, Richardson was one of the best live pigeon shooters in the world. But just minutes after arriving home, he was ambushed in his driveway by two gunmen armed with shotguns. The attackers fled, leaving Richardson dead and his family terrified.

The murder shocked Richardson's wealthy South Texas neighborhood. Why would anyone want to kill a respected businessman, husband, and father? And why did some of his closest friends seem to fear they might be next?

As investigators dug into Richardson's life, they uncovered a world far removed from his respectable public image. Behind the hunting trips, pigeon shoots, and lavish lifestyle were financial troubles, high-stakes gambling, and associations with dangerous criminals. What initially appeared to be a senseless killing began to look like a carefully orchestrated hit.

Detectives eventually identified two suspected gunmen, but their investigation raised an even more troubling question: Who had hired them? The search for answers led authorities into the shadowy world of organized crime, where gambling debts, betrayal, and murder often went hand in hand.

In this episode of Blood Trails, host Jordan Sillars investigates Richardson's murder through interviews with his daughter, childhood witnesses, and journalist Peter Barth, whose research uncovered new leads in the decades-old case. Together, they explore a tangled story of wealth, deception, and violence—and the devastating consequences for a family still searching for answers.

More than 50 years later, no one has been convicted of Bill Richardson's murder. But the evidence suggests that the truth may have been hiding in plain sight all along.
