This photo of a domesticated whitetail in Texas is currently making the rounds across hunting sites on the Web, along with a tagline celebrating its estimated value of one million dollars. However, you don’t need to look too closely to notice the buck’s ear tag and the high-wire fence in the background. These are two things that should be problematic for any hunter who loves deer and deer hunting. We cherish the whitetail deer as a symbol of this nation’s wild lands and big game hunting heritage. Sticking a herd of deer behind a fence and tinkering with their diets and genetic lines until they produce offspring that are incapable of living normal, healthy lives has nothing to do with either of those things. Of course you’re free to do this sort of thing with your own money and on your own land, and I wouldn’t argue against that right, but this buck has about as much to do with real American hunting as a Transformer has to do with your pickup truck.  –Steven Rinella
